What is Way of Council?

In Way of Council we gather in a circle to speak and listen from the heart. It is a form of dialogue that emphasizes open, heartfelt expression and empathetic listening. This practice is often used in community building, education, conflict resolution, and spiritual gatherings. The key components of the Way of Council include:

  1. Speaking from the Heart: Sharing one’s true feelings and thoughts honestly and openly, without masks or pretenses.
  2. Listening from the Heart: Listening attentively and compassionately to others, without judgment or interruption, trying to understand the speaker’s perspective deeply.
  3. Speaking Spontaneously: Allowing the conversation to flow naturally without planning what to say in advance, letting the dialogue be guided by the moment and the group’s energy.
  4. Speaking Leanly: Being concise and to the point, respecting the group’s time and the opportunity for all to share.

The Way of Council is rooted in various indigenous traditions and has been adapted and adopted by different cultures and groups around the world. It is often facilitated by a trained individual who guides the process, ensuring that the space remains respectful, inclusive, and focused on the collective well-being of the group. The practice can be applied in various settings, including educational institutions, corporate environments, therapeutic groups, and community organizations, aiming to foster deeper understanding, respect, and connection among participants.
